Mamma Etna

Mamma Etna

A fascinating aspect of Catania is the way the natural environment still shapes the development amd the very sould of the city, despite its role of small capital.
Catanese people refer to the volcano that overlooks the gulf as Mamma Etna (Mum Etna), therefore depicting it (her) as a caring and yet short-tempered mother whose fury could destroy anything it would encounter on its path.
Being born on the Sicilian island, in the narrow space between the inconstant magnanimity of Mamma Etna and the Mediterranean Sea, Catania preserved with the latter a visceral bond, usually more typical of rural communities.
